Romitaman Solicits Huntress Miniseries Covers
Art for Sale
Written by MN
Thursday, 24 April 2008
Mike Burkey, comic book original art trader and proprietor of Romitaman Original Art, is offering for sale the entire set of four Huntress Miniseries covers I produced for the DC Comics circa 1994-95. The art is also on display in our comic book cover galleries.

Unique about this art is its experimental value and the massive use of white paint as a drawing medium along with the inking, transforming the process into more of a black and white painting, relative to traditional inking techniques, as can be seen in the enlargement of the images below.

Mike has also placed a relatively handsome price on the art. Click the solicited prices below for each issue, to view his solicitation pages.

  1. $1,800

  2. $2,200

  3. $1,700

  4. $1,600

This is an encouraging indication when considering that the original agent whom I gave these pages to in the mid-1990's, valued the covers at between $300 to $500 each.

Also curious about the scans that Mike provides is the omission of the Huntress face spanning the four covers, which can be seen below. This was an integral design of the four covers together, intended for use as a solicitation poster for the series. A DC editorial decision later omitted the cover art, leaving only the Huntress face in the center as the poster art. From Mike's scans, it appears the partial Huntress face in each cover has been blacked out, or covered up by black paper. I personally have no recollection of this being the case when the cover originals were returned to me. I've also procured another scan of these originals which indicates the face being there previously.

The mysterious disappearance of this face in Mike's scans might be answered by examining the original art itself. It would be a shame to lose this value in the originals by someone having inexplicably disfigured the art. Especially noting that DC Comics had no reason to do so, because they did not separate the Huntress face from the cover images for the production process, as is evident in the printed covers.

Though the expected proceeds from the increased value of the art are entirely the property of the Mike Burkey, having purchased them directly (or somewhere down the line) from the original agent I gave the art to in order to be sold, I nonetheless urge comics art collectors to consider the added investment value of such a purchase. I have indicated before that with my prolonged web activity and peripheral involvement in the comics community, that such original art is bound to continue increasing in value. This solicitation is then a good indication of this long-term process. A good investment in original art along with the added value for particular connoisseurs of my work.

Below are Mike's scans. Click each one for enlarged images. They are followed by the original scans I once received and also scans of the printed covers.

Hi Michael! I'm one of those comic book readers that have all the four issues of
the mini serie. And that face is important! More than once I've been showing
friends the four issues, and put them together like a puzzle...And everybody
just love it! So what's this all about, selling each cover for more, of course,
but who wants a cover that's not corresponds to the comic book version?? Or that
can maybe make the price higher?? For people who only treat art like an
investment, and in this cheating manner, I have no words...
Take care!
