One More Day and Brand New Art
Comics
Written by MN

Ongoing Spider-Man retcon events continue making waves around comics fandom. As EIC Joe Quesada realized a 20 some odd year ambition to roll back the clock on Peter Parker's marriage to Mary Jane Watson in One More Day, the storyline was met with staunch criticism for not having convincingly navigated the attempted erasure of the marriage from Marvel history. Now with the follow up, Brand New Day, rolling out, featuring a free and single Spider-Man, a certain buzz around comics fandom is re-focusing on the role Mephisto played in the "divorcing" of our friendly neighborhood love birds.

Rich Johnston, in his New Year's Resolution at Lying in the Gutters, last week, opined on this and other Marvel Comics adventures:

    1. Stop buying Marvel Comics. Subscribe to Marvel DCU in six months time. Start reading (all their titles) again then. Live with whatever spoilers get forced upon me. Save money and space.

But that was last week. Meantime, towards week's end, Rich sent out a satire 2 page script to some friends, that I also received. It was a good gag, rather funny and somewhat poignant in its implications for Mephisto, widely known as the reigning Satan of the Marvel universe. Funny and clever enough, I thought, that it cried to be realized into illustrated comics pages.

So, I spent part of last weekend realizing this newfound ambition.

I then emailed the two pages to Rich who seemed to like the result.

    You insane man!!!!!!

So much so, in fact, that the two pages are the lead item in this week's installment of LITG. Brand New Art.

Along with a hearty recommendation for the fast, quality, underused and under appreciated artist who produced them.

Someone could make a lot of money with him on their books.

I must say I have been thinking the same thing of late.

Great job on that li'l two page gag by Rich Johnson. Sad to say, they
storytelling on the first, panel page is a damn sight better than a lot of stuff
you see in most mainstream books nowadays. You're still an amazing artist, and
I hope one day you can work on a project of your own for an independent company.
At least that avenue, however limited, is open to creators, something that
really didn't exist twenty years ago.

It's only a warm up, really, and many more good surprises are on the way.
Thanks, Ben.

GOOD publicity...

Absolutely. My heartiest gratitude goes to Rich for the good words and he knows
it. Rich is a one of a kind reporter with a passionate concern for comics
artists and writers, as he shows with the non-payment to creators crusades he
wages.

Rich Johnston: Undisputed king of the comics journalists!

Michael! That was wonderful. You and Rich did a great job. I loved his idea,
and your art, as always is impeccable. Keep it up!

And like Rich and everyone
else, I hope to see you in the funny pages soon.

Mucho Gracias, Mark! Looking forward to being there, but you know, this site
also keeps me busy and provides a lot of satisfaction.

I shudder at the
possibility that immersing myself into a comics project would put the site on
hold for a while. Though the rewards, and not only monetary, but rather the
stage that doing such work provides... well it goes hand in hand with the
efforts here. Thanks Much!
